As far as I know, there aren’t currently any Cuban restaurant concepts in downtown Austin proper. Well, there WASN’T before this week, anyway. There’s a new one popping up in the warehouse district, where the now defunct Stack Burger Bar used to be (one of the restaurant concepts owned by the now infamous Yassine Enterprises).
Let me introduce you to Pleasant Storage Room, officially opening TODAY:
Garnering its name from the first cocktail bar in Havana, Cuba, Pleasant Storage Room brings the eclectic and elegant energy of pre-revolution Havana to downtown Austin. Tucked into 4th Street, the exposed brick, marble counter top and brass fixtures are juxtaposed with graffiti and old-world tile to give Austinites a taste of the culture of Cuba. Over-proof punches, rum-inspired cocktails and a ceviche bar highlight the lively flavors of the island.
I went to a private event there last night and was VERY impressed with the food. As well I should be, I guess. Paul Hargrove is the chef, and hails from such culinary concepts as East Side Showroom and Trace. The ceviche I had was to die for, and even the simple plantains were absolutely yum.
The vibe feels authentic-y (at least to someone who is not an expert on Cuban culture), and I think Pleasant Stoage Room’s rum focus with specialized Cuban dining will also serve to be a nice compliment to neighboring Peche’, a french cuisine / absinthe cocktail themed concept.
Very walkable from downtown Austin condos like Railyard Condominiums, Brazos Lofts, and the 360.
Interesting, if not totally related, side note – nearby office space of 2800ft was listed at about $8k/mth NNN just a year ago. Woah! Obligatory Ricky Ricardo reaction gif:
Eater has a really nice series of write-ups on Pleasant Storage Room in the Warehouse District, which include menus, etc. Check them out!
