Wednesday Bike Sharing Showcase At Austin City Hall

Jude Galligan | October 26, 2010 |

This Wednesday from 11-2pm, drop by city hall to see B-Cycle bike sharing concept in action.  Last month, we wrote that bike sharing could not only help solve many “last mile” transit problems, it would also become a superb recreational amenity for the entire city and its visitors.

What: B-cycle demo event for city officials and members of the public
Where
: 301 W 2nd St, Austin, TX 78701 (Lavaca Street)
When
: Demo runs from 11am-2pm; setup at 9:30am

From the Downtown Austin Alliance:

“Just as car-sharing systems provide a convenient way to use cars on a short-term rental basis, bicycle-sharing systems allow people to check out bikes to run errands and make other short trips.  Representatives of B-cycle, a national company that produces bicycles and other equipment for and works with cities to implement bicycle-sharing systems, will demonstrate their product at City Hall plaza from 11 am – 2 pm on Wednesday, October 27th. They will explain how bike sharing can decrease dependence on single-occupant vehicles, help improve mobility and support efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The public is invited to stop be and talk with B-cycle staff member and to take a short ride on one of their bikes.”

Photos From Downtown Austin Bike Tour

Post ride on 2nd Street with DAB’s cycle crew: AG, Fred Schmidt, Greg Anderson, Jude Galligan
Elliott of A2W (and ride organizer) fitted me on this handmade city bike by WorkCycles.  Step through cruisers like this are perfect for city riding.

This past Saturday morning about 30 people met at Royal Blue Grocery for a casual ride of downtown Austin. We were able to showcase a a selection of residential condos that would give attendees a broad picture of what types of properties exist – Milago in the Rainey Street District sits on the hike and bike trail, Brazos Lofts is the best example of a genuine loft space, 904 West highlights the tree-canopy rich northwest district of downtown Austin.

Despite the incredible humidity, everyone had a great time, and the pace was just right.  Nobody got left behind, nor got too far ahead.  Thanks to the Elliot and his crew at Austin On Two Wheels for organizing the ride. Thanks to Bryan Cady, Roland Galang, Anna Anami, and Noa Levy for providing the real estate to preview.   Thanks to Greg Anderson for being on photo duty. Last, but not least, thanks to the local sponsors of the ride…

Nueces Bike Boulevard/Local Access Street Stakeholder Meeting

Jude Galligan | January 12, 2010 |

Downtown Austin Blog is in support of the Nueces Bike Boulevard.  Show your support for a more walkable and pedestrian urban core by attending this event.

The City of Austin invites you to share your thoughts on a potential Nueces Bicycle Boulevard/Local Access Street at two upcoming meetings:

January 13: In response to stakeholder feedback, this meeting will include a discussion on the pros and cons of Rio Grande Street as compared to Nueces Street as a Bicycle Boulevard/Local Access Street.

February 24: City staff will present the results of traffic data analyses (This meeting was originally scheduled for 1/27).

Both meetings will be held at Pease Elementary School, 1106 Rio Grande St, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

You can learn more about the project at the City of Austin Bicycle website.

Please contact Jason Fialkoff via email or at (512) 974-7060 or with any questions or concerns.

Thank you,
Downtown Austin Alliance
