New (to me) Farmer's Market for Downtown Austin Residents – HOPE Farmer's Market

I live on the east edges of Downtown Austin, and one of my very favorite things about my location is that I can walk to East Austin on a whim.  It’s like I get the best of both worlds.  There’s soooo much happening on the east side of I-35, and many of my favorite retail/restaurant stops are located in East Austin.

One of the best (in my opinion) coffee shops over that way is Cafe Mundi, an earthy, hidden coffee shop with one of the tastiest, but simplest, breakfast sandwiches in Austin.  I was dreaming of said breakfast sandwich this past Saturday, so I took a nice and bundled-up walk over. As I was removing the million layers of clothing I had donned for my walk, I noticed a postcard advertisement on the table for a farmer’s market called HOPE (which stands for Helping Other People Everywhere) Farmer’s Market – which is held near 5th and Waller.  Cafe Mundi (along with Daily Juice, Moonshine, Big Red Sun, and the Austin Art + Music Partnership, and others) is a sponsor of the HOPE Farmer’s Market, described on their website as “a weekly community gathering space where local farmers, artisans, community groups, families, and urban consumers can find fresh foods, community programs, artistic creations, agricultural education and wellness workshops.”

Now, this has been going on since October 25th, but I’ll be honest, I am generally either working on a project or nursing a hangover on Sunday mornings from 11 am – 3 pm, and have not had the opportunity to attend.  I’m planning on changing that this weekend and going out and taking some pics and doing a little recon for all the DAB readers.  Stay tuned for updates!

Statesman Blotter Headlines

David Cross robbed your bank

Did David Cross just rob your bank?

Recently, the Statesman’s Blotter headlines have provided me with a few chuckles.  I don’t intend to make light of the actual crimes – at all – just the headlines.

The above man, bearing a strong resemblance to David Cross (aka. Tobias Funke), apparently entered a bank and demanded money.  The bank gave it to him. Is it really that simple?  Then, there was the story of two men stealing socks and a chicken from Wal Mart in Cedar Park.  Look at those ready-for-myspace mug shots!  Next, was a story involving a carnival worker.  Not a funny story.

From the archive: What Does Downtown Austin Need?

Last month I wrote about six items downtown Austin could significantly benefit from.  It’s a slow news morning, so I thought I would re-post the links together.  Politicians love to talk, form task forces, and spend time doing everything except for making decisions as they are needed. So, this is an appeal to Downtown Austin stakeholders that know how to get things done: the residents, developers, retailers, and land owners.

This is what we need:

1) Super Target on Congress Ave. (link)
2) Hardware store on Congress Ave. (link)
3) More bodega grocers (link)
4) Move social services away from Sixth Street (link)
5) Improved landmark protection and design standards (link)
6) Urban Rail (link)

It’s Sunday morning – my favorite time of the week. This morning I walked to Jo’s coffee, ordered two breakfast tacos and a Topo Chico. It’s packed with people of all ages.  This Sunday morning routine is something I developed growing up in Pittsburgh and, personally, it perfectly describes why I love living in the city.  Downtown Austin has come a long way in a short amount of time. Most people that live in Austin are not from Austin (I don’t have any data to back this up, but stick with me). People immigrate to Austin from California and the Northern states.  We come here for the weather and the lifestyle, and inevitably gravitate towards dense neighborhoods.  We seek out places to live and work that have close proximity. Places where each person’s experiences are more intimate and common to everyone else.  Here I am, in one of America’s greatest cities, with laptop open I just ordered another cup of Jo’s coffee.  I see people I know. Damn, this is nice.

It's election day. Get out and vote!

ACL 2008 Schedule Released This Morning

The music lineup for one of Austin’s biggest events was announced. From the Austinist, “This morning, Austin City Limits Festival
organizers released the schedule for 2008. The lineup, featuring acts
like Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Spiritualized, Foo Fighters,
Beck and Manu Chao, is notable this year thanks to its extremely strong
middle section (the “heat of the day” section, as we like to call it)
and offers acts like MGMT, Patty Griffin, Hot Chip and Duffy, as well
as several quite worthy local acts, including Okkervil River and White
Denim.”

Live Music Taskforce Meeting On Wednesday

The purpose of the public hearing is to receive citizen input on issues surrounding entertainment districts.

Created by Mayor Will Wynn and the Austin City Council in January 2008, the task force is evaluating the state of live music in Austin. The 15-member task force is comprised of musicians, venue owners, promoters and neighborhood representatives, and has formed four subcommittees to review specific areas related to live music.
