Another Rainey Street Bar Pops Up – AGORA

1/2/2013: We just heard a rumor from a reliable source that Agora is closed for good and owners are planning to sell. We’ll continue to update as we have new information.

A new bar/lounge (guess) called “Agora” is readying their new space at 84 East Avenue in Downtown Austin’s Rainey Street neighborhood. This is just few steps down from East Avenue Lounge (aka Rainey Manor). Picture of Agora and updated Rainey Street Map after the jump.

Perigee Moon Over Downtown Austin

Last night was the Perigee moon: when the moon’s orbit is closest to earth. This was a good excuse to hike around Lady Bird Lake and take some pictures of Downtown Austin. After hiking a few miles to Bee Caves at Mopac, and despite forgetting my tripod, the journey yielded a few pictures worth posting. Above is my favorite.

Jude and I are both on the board of the Downtown Austin Neighborhood Association (DANA) – a grassroots community organization dedicated to improving the lives of those who live, work, and / or play in the Downtown Austin Community. It’s an organization that we believe in, and an organization that is affecting positive change in our community.

Hotel Van Zandt Returns

According to Jacob Dirr’s twitter feed, paperwork was filed today by Bury and Partners for the construction of Hotel Van Zandt. This time sans condos. We confirmed this with the city, and indeed the .68 acre site is back in play. Owned by JMI Realty, the site sits adjacent (north) of The Shore Condos in Downtown Austin’s Rainey Street neighborhood. Caffe Medici Opens Under The Austonian

Just in time for SXSW, Caffe Medici opens its third location. Located in the Austonian on Congress Ave, I was immediately impressed with the finish out. Great layout, great light, great coffee.
