Downtown Austin Goes For The Goal – and the Gold!

Fred Schmidt | March 28, 2014 |

If you haven’t yet read this week’s edition of The Austin Chronicle – and seen the amazing front page photo/rendering – please check it out at once here! Stupendous reporting by Senior News Editor, Michael King, of breaking news regarding a multi-billion dollar plan to build a Major League Soccer (MLS) stadium in the middle of Lady Bird Lake, coupled with the new Light Rail line running straight through the center of the stadium as the train crosses the river.

An Amazing New Vision for Downtown Austin
An Amazing New Vision for Downtown Austin

The only component that Michael missed is inclusion of the new NW-to-SE Colorado River Autobahn toll-road proposed to zing Austin’s high-end European sports car set from the Northwest Hills straight into Downtown and on to Austin-Bergstrom Airport down the center of the river in under 15 minutes for 15 bucks.
And to think that all of this fantastical Austin future visioning has its humble beginnings in the over-water portions of the new “Boardwalk” Trail now taking shape along the river’s south shore, a showdown that saw progressive New Austinites trounce environmentalists and nature lovers to prove that this river can be a productive revenue-generating community asset and not just a pretty urban backdrop.
Gawd, it’s great to be living in these heady times of Austin’s runaway global popularity and prosperity!  Residing directly in front of the planned new stadium, I can’t wait to spin up a slew of new entrepreneurial ventures that include vending popcorn, hot dogs and beer from a fleet of circling kayaks…firing promotional t-shirts and koozies into the center of the open dome from air canons on both shorelines…and organizing monthly marathons to run laps around the new stadium floating sidewalk!
