A Smarter Route? Proposed Urban Rail Along Trinity Street

Jude Galligan | March 2, 2012 |

Transportation wonks: is there something different about the conceptual urban rail alignment depicted in the latest flyer from Project Connect?

The portion of the rail system south of 4th Street is showing that the preferred alignment (solid orange lines) is not Congress Ave, rather it’s humble ol’ Trinity Street.

On previous maps, I recall Congress Ave having the bold lines and Trinity Street relegated to a hypothetical dashed line.  This is a subtle change on paper, but a potentially big improvement to ridership and economic impact.

I presume a Trinity alignment would have a stop at/near Waller Creek.  Imagine connecting businesses and visitors to the Rainey Street district, Waller Creek, the Boat House, the MACC, the Convention Center.  There’s greater density of residential and recreational use.  There’s more [taxable] development opportunity along the Trinity alignment.

Downtown Austin Neighborhood Association – Urban Core Happy Hour Tonight (Thursday)

AG | October 13, 2011 |

Tonight!  Come to Clive Bar in the Rainey Street District to enjoy a keg of beer and some sushi (compliments of How Do You Roll?) for the October Urban Core Happy Hour.  It’s gonna be a great night to be outside on the patio, and a good chance to see what all the “Rainey Street” fuss is about.  The event is TONIGHT from 6:30pm-8:30pm at Clive (609 Davis Street).

A Note: At Urban Core Happy Hours DANA Members get in free, however non-members will be asked to pay $5 or bring 3 cans of food. (The canned food will be donated to Caritas.) Entry into event includes food and drink tickets.  Non-members will also have the opportunity to sign up to become a DANA Member on the spot and get in free to this and all Urban Core Happy Hours for the next year.

If you’re not a DANA Member and would like to be, you can sign up at the Urban Core Happy Hour, or you can click here to be directed to our Membership page to join now.

See you tonight!

Help Promote RE/MAX, Help Austin Pets Alive

Jude Galligan | August 31, 2011 |

Austin Pets Alive logo

This past March, without much promotion, I launched RE/MAX Downtown Austin in the Rainey Street District.  It’s been a strong summer of sales, and now our focus is on reinvestment.

Rather than spending scarce $$$ on print advertising that is quickly obsolete, I believe we can simultaneously promote RE/MAX and invest in the community.

Few casualties of society are more troubling than abused or neglected animals.  Indeed, most of us feel this way.  We would look the other way if Chuck Norris sought vengeance upon the Michael Vicks of the works.

So, here’s how we’re going to spend my limited ad budget: we’re going to donate the entirety of it to Austin Pets Alive and rally the community to help.

Once the RE/MAX Downtown Austin facebook fan page reaches 2,000 “likes”, I’ll donate $1,000.00 to Austin Pets Alive.  It’s a modest goal, knowing that not everyone gets excited about real estate fan pages [like I do :-)]

The first step was to run the idea by the founder and matriarch of APA, Ellen Jefferson. I’m grateful to have her support and look forward to making a significant contribution to APA.  It’s exciting to promote awareness for RE/MAX Downtown Austin knowing the money will directly impact animal safety, shelter, adoption.

Please repost this: “Like” @RE/MAX Downtown Austin on facebook and help raise $1,000.00 to support @Austin Pets Alive once.  Please share!

Thanks for your help!
UPDATE 9/6/2011: RE/MAX Downtown Austin is accelerating our donation of $1,000 to Austin Pets Alive! immediately, in order to support APA’s ongoing efforts to assist the animals affected by the fires. There are some things more urgent than being “liked”. While short of our goal of reaching 2,000 “fans”, we’re grateful for all of our new fans. Thanks, everyone!

Bicycle Boulevard Progress

Jude Galligan | July 10, 2011 |

Here are visible signs that the “Bicycle Boulevard” and the accompanying traffic calming improvements are taking shape.  After breakfast, yesterday, I snapped this photo of the construction at Rio Grande and 10th Street (POV is south along Rio Grande).

I really like this.  Traffic circles are… just… charming.  This should be complementary to the Original Austin neighborhood.

Rainey Street has one that I go around most days.  It seems to be effective.  They encourage drivers to pay more attention, and to interact with other drivers through gazes, gestures, and waves.
