Downtown Austin: Census Data In Perspective

Chris Bradford | April 12, 2011 |

2010 downtown austin census blocks

Anyone who knows what a construction crane looks like knows that downtown Austin experienced phenomenal growth between 2000 and 2010. The 2010 Census confirms what we could see: Census tract 11 (which includes the CBD and Rainey Street) more than doubled in population, from 2,386 to 5,512. And that excludes dense developments that most would consider part of “downtown,” including Gables Park Plaza, the Monarch, Spring and Nokonah, all within Census tract 12. Add these and Downtown’s growth was even more impressive. [Read more…] about Downtown Austin: Census Data In Perspective

Downtown Austin Apartment High Rise To Get A Name Change

Jude Galligan | April 4, 2011 |

windsor-on-the-lake

Downtown Austin Blog has learned that the Legacy On The Lake apartment high rise will undergo rebranding as “Windsor On The Lake”, or to something similar.  Windsor Communities has purchased a controlling interest in the Rainey Street tower from Legacy Partners, and within the next couple of weeks we should expect to see new signage. Completed in 2008, Legacy On The Lake is a 187 unit LEED certified building.

Hotel Van Zandt Returns

Jude Galligan | March 14, 2011 |

hotel-van-zandt

According to Jacob Dirr’s twitter feed, paperwork was filed today by Bury and Partners for the construction of Hotel Van Zandt. This time sans condos.  We confirmed this with the city, and indeed the .68 acre site is back in play. Owned by JMI Realty, the site sits adjacent (north) of The Shore Condos in Downtown Austin’s Rainey Street neighborhood.   [Read more…] about Hotel Van Zandt Returns

I’ve Got a Nice Little Sunday Planned….(New Royal Blue Grocery – PICTURES, Zach Scott, IF + D)…

AG | January 30, 2011 |

Actually we’ve got a nice little Sunday planned. We’re going to Home Depot to pick out some wallpaper, then maybe we’ll hit Bed Bath and Beyond… I don’t know! I don’t know if we’ll have enough time….

That’s what you say if you’re Frank “The Tank” Picard and you live in the ‘burbs.

But, if you’re lucky enough to live in downtown Austin, your Sunday probably looks quite a bit different.  I know mine usually does.

Take today, for example.  This afternoon, I “trekked” over to Zach Scott Theatre to do a little volunteering, and was then actually lucky enough to be able to see the show that’s currently running on the Kleberg Stage – “Red Hot Patriot,” a play about the revered Texas icon, Molly Ivins (played by Barbara Chisholm).  Good show. And, with the 2011 Legislature now in session, this play seems particularly appropriate to see.   AND, for the antsy among us, it’s the perfect run time – ~78 minutes, no intermission, and they sell booze at the concession stand before the show.  The fast and easy way to get in a little culture!
