Perigee Moon Over Downtown Austin

Perigee Moon Over Downtown Austin Texas - 06

Perigee Moon Over Downtown Austin Texas - 06

Last night was the Perigee moon: when the moon’s orbit is closest to earth. This was a good excuse to hike around Lady Bird Lake and take some pictures of Downtown Austin. After hiking a few miles to Bee Caves at Mopac, and despite forgetting my tripod, the journey yielded a few pictures worth posting. Above is my favorite.

Hotel Van Zandt Returns

Jude Galligan | March 14, 2011 |

hotel-van-zandt

According to Jacob Dirr’s twitter feed, paperwork was filed today by Bury and Partners for the construction of Hotel Van Zandt. This time sans condos.  We confirmed this with the city, and indeed the .68 acre site is back in play. Owned by JMI Realty, the site sits adjacent (north) of The Shore Condos in Downtown Austin’s Rainey Street neighborhood.   [Read more…] about Hotel Van Zandt Returns

Cafe Medici at The Austonian

Just in time for SXSW, Caffe Medici opens its third location.  Located in the Austonian on Congress Ave, I was immediately impressed with the finish out.  Great layout, great light, great coffee.  We’ll soon need to update our Best Coffee Shops In Austin list. A couple of quick android pics after the jump. [Read more…] about Caffe Medici Opens Under The Austonian

Container Bar coming to Rainey Street

Our friends at Austin civil engineering firm Big Red Dog just sent us fresh new renderings of the planned Container Bar in Downtown Austin’s Rainey Street neighborhood. The site is currently being used by Cazamance African-fusion patio/restaurant on the corner of Rainey and Davis Streets.  It will be interesting to watch the this project come alive, as I’m not aware of anything else like it in Central Texas. This Is Bull

Jude Galligan | March 9, 2011 |

castleman bull house on red river

This is the Castleman-Bull house on Red River Street in Downtown Austin.   Located just east of the Convention Center, most of us have driven past this curious property at some point in recent years.

It currently serves no purpose except as a popular spectacle of wonder for the hungover Moonshine brunch crowd. The blighted chain link fence and “keep out” signs hint at something ominous, but daring us to to get close as possible. I’ve always found it to be creepy in the coolest way possible.  Time for some urban exploration! [Read more…] about This Is Bull

Downtown Austin Condo Sales Show Growth

Jude Galligan | March 7, 2011 |

Downtown Austin condo sales continue to reflect strong fundamentals as resale data from February shows increases year-to-year, and from month-to-month.

I’m continuing to tinker with some new statistics, including the effect of the average age of square footage sold. Values of downtown Austin condos tend to be highly correlated with age. This “age/area” metric is useful when comparing monthly data, and I can quickly tell if the data set is skewed towards older or new buildings.  In February, the [Read more…] about Downtown Austin Condo Sales Show Growth

Dress Shop Austin

AG | March 4, 2011 |

Perhaps you’ve noticed the elegant fashions in the window next to Annie’s on an evening stroll down Congress Avenue. Perhaps you’ve seen the sign with the simple, but apt, words “Dress Shop.”

Perhaps you haven’t.

But you should.

Dress Shop is, you guessed it, a dress shop selling dresses, jewelry, handbags, and ladies undergarments. It’s located 315 Congress Avenue, right above the Elephant Room, and just south of Annie’s. And the dresses are [Read more…] about Dress Shop Austin
